How do air source heat pumps work?

Air source heat pumps are a low-carbon heating system that uses the same processes found in a refrigerator or freezer. A pump sucks in fresh air outside, then uses this warm air to heat a special refrigerant liquid inside. The liquid then turns into gas as it warms up.

The gas is then compressed and heated, providing warmth throughout your homes. Once it cools down, it returns back to being a liquid and gets used again for the next cycle. One benefit of heat pumps is that they only require a small amount of energy to run - even during the coldest of winters.

There are many other advantages to choosing an air source heat pump over traditional methods, such as gas or electricity. They are more environmentally friendly than conventional heating systems because they don’t produce any harmful carbon emissions.

Benefits of installing air source heat pumps

Installing heat pump systems in your home could:

  • Reduced your energy bills
  • Energy efficient
  • No need for a boiler or hot water tank
  • Reduces your carbon footprint
  • They are quiet - so no more noisy radiators!
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Easy installation
  • Low maintenance costs

How are air source heat pumps used?

Air source heat pumps can be used primarily:

For heating - Heat pumps are great for heating homes because they're efficient and cost effective. They use electricity to move warm air around, rather than burning fuel like traditional boilers do. If you live in a cold climate, a heat pump might actually be better suited to cooling your home than a radiator system.

For hot water - Air to water heat pumps can be used to generate hot water for your property. This means you don't have to rely on traditional central heating systems, such as boilers, gas and electricity. As a result, you could save money on your energy bills

Is a heat pump system suitable for my property?

A heat pump is one of the best ways to cut fuel bills, but there are things you need to consider before deciding whether yours is suitable. Heat pumps systems work best for properties which are off the gas grid. These are properties that use expensive fuels like electricity, oil, LPG or coal for heating.

Heat pump systems are ideal for well-insulated homes. This is because insulation stops heat escaping, so without it, your heat pump won't work effectively. Heat pumps work best when the temperature difference of the heat pump system and heat distribution is small. Unlike traditional heating systems, heat pump systems produce heat at a lower temperature, which requires a larger area for distribution.

If you do decide to go ahead with a heat pump, make sure you know what size it needs to be. Most manufacturers offer standard sizes, but you may find yourself needing to customise it - we offer a bespoke design service for heat pump systems.
